NICS is an interdisciplinary centre of investigation that gathers researchers from different areas and backgrounds around the central theme of sound communication seeking the interaction between arts, humanities and technology.
Located at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), NICS was founded in 1983 by composer Raul do Valle and collaborators and has ever since been actively participating in the academic and musical scene. Research main interests include the application of mathematical models and computer technology for sound synthesis, acoustics, psychoacoustics, machine improvisation, music cognition, interactive performance, and music composition.
In addition to its scientific production, NICS also has a longstanding tradition on the creation and performance of artworks and provides an opportunity for students of different areas to interact with each other on the development of projects related to sound communication. Facilities include a local computer network with broadband Internet connection, music recording studio, meeting and lecture rooms.
Research is supported by major Brazilian research councils such as Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP), Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), and Fundo de Apoio ao Ensino, à Pesquisa e à Extensão (FAEPEX, UNICAMP's own research agency).
